Introduction

The preparation of this review has been possible thanks to the organization of the activity on the part of the Club's open-Air Wallcreeper.

The descent of the Barranco de las Chorreras or Río Verde is made up of two sections (upper and lower sections) and can be done with or without a combination of vehicles. The option we propose here is the complete realization of the descent using a combination of vehicles. To do so, we will start by parking a vehicle in Junta de los Ríos (a place that can be accessed through a lane property of the Sociedad Cooperativa, Agrícola y Ganadera, del Campo de Cázulas, previously paying a toll). Immediately after we will go in a second vehicle to the Carril de las Cbererizas and we'll park it there. We will continue on foot, going down the lane, but we will soon abandon it to continue walking through a trail, always staying near the bed of the Barranco de los Chortales y de los Madroñales. We will start the canyoning activity at that point. The upper section counts with 1,2 km. and 4 rappels, 3 of them jumpable. Once finished with the upper section of the ravine we will have the opportunity to abandon it and return to the upper parking. Should we continue with the descent, there'll still be 1,1 km. and 2 more rappels to go, before reaching the Junta de los Ríos where the lower parking is located.

Río Verde is formed in the Sierra de la Almijara, when the ravines of Chorreras and Mina Rica join, and flows into the Mediterranean Sea after flowing through the municipalities of Otívar, Jete, and Almuñecar (Granada).

The activity of canyoning proposed here is developed in its entirety in the Barranco de las Chorreras, however, is popularly known as the drop of the Río Verde.

Río Verde owes its name to the emerald color of the existing pools of crystalline water on its headwaters.

Description

DURATION:

The realization of this activity requires 1 day.

DIFFICULTY:

Very high. It is a descent of ravines which, in consequence, requires the knowledge of specific techniques, the use of adequate equipment, and a previous deep comprehension of the aquatic medium the activity is carried on. As in every canyoneering activity, there exists an evident risk of falls with grave consequences. The fixed equipment this ravine counts on, and on which depends the progression and/or protection against falls in some sections (anchors, handrails, etc.) do not count with regulated periodic maintenance. It is the responsibility of each user to consult/check if the equipment is in a good state and judge whether or not they can trust it before using it. The activity is developed inside a natural course of water so, depending on the time of the year and the meteorology, the flow of the ravine might drastically vary. We must never underestimate risks and overestimate our capabilities. In case of doubt, please always resort to a professional ravine guide.

M. I. D. E. Method (tour Information):

Assessment of aspects 1 to 5.

WATER:

It is possible to find water in the Fuente de las Cabrerizas, a spring located in the Barranco de los Chortales, at the edge of the Carril de las Cabrerizas. To get to the source from the beginning of the path that runs parallel to the Barranco de los Chortales (point 1), it is necessary to continue down the Carril de las Cabrerizas up to the bed of the ravine.

Along the descent of the Barranco de las Chorreras (the activity of canyoning itself) we will pass through points at which water emerges.

MATERIAL NEEDED:

Individual: hull, a swimsuit and aquatic shirt (dispensable when dry), booties, wetsuit and neoprene gloves (dispensable when dry), canyoning harness, canyoning boots (for trekking in dry), anchor ends (e.g.: made with 2 licking biners, a dynamic rope of 9-10 mm in diameter and 1 maillon of 8 mm in diameter), 1 belay device (1 figure eight or similar, with 1 locking biner), whistle, pocket knife (with 1 carabiner and 1 thin rope to tie it to the harness), 4 locking biners, 3 rings of sewn lanyard (1x120 cm and 2x60 cm, with their respective pairs of locking biners), material for self-rescue (e.g.: 2 locking biners, 1 of them with a built-in pulley, and 2 rings of rope of 7 mm diameter), canyoning bag (ordinary backpack when dry), water-tight bag (dispensable when dry), water (1.5-2 l.), food, charged cell phone, charged headtorch, thermal blanket, lighter, sunscreen, goggles (dispensable when dry), and clothing and footwear to spare to leave in the vehicle.

Collective: 1 rope semi-static rope of 40 m., 2 lines of 7 mm diameter and 3 m. m and 5 m. in length, 1 locking pulley (with 1 symmetric carabiner), 2 figure eight (1+1 to spare for assembly of a detachable anchor), 1 multi anchoring plate, 2-3 maillons of 8 mm of diameter, a first aid kit, sketch of the ravine and GPS (with spare batteries). n

BEST TIME/S:

It is possible to go down this ravine at any time during the year. However, the best time is in the spring, avoiding the crowds typical of the summer. Avoid descending the ravine in case of a existing risk of storms.

MAPPING:

Parque Natural Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. Editorial Piolet. Scale 1:25,000.

LANDSCAPE, FLORA AND FAUNA:

Dominated by calcareous formations, typical of the region Subbética, and marbles, schists, phyllites, etc, which give rise to heights above 1700 meters, as is the case of la Maroma (2065 m.), the Lucero (1779 meters above sea level.) or the Navachica (1832 meters above sea level.).

There is a presence of pines, oaks, wild olives... in addition to a large number of aromatic plants, such as thyme, lavender, and pilgrims. This vegetation has been weakened mainly due to logging, fires, and excess of livestock.

Among the amphibians, you can find populations of Iberian ribbed newt, marbled newt, salamander, midwife toad, common toad, Spanish painted frog, common spadefoot, natterjack toad, Mediterranean Tree Frog, and common frog.

MATCHING ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES:

  • Descent of the River Lentegí.

REMARKS:

It is necessary to consider that the descents of canyons are, very often, the subject of re-equipment, sometimes motivated by the wear and tear of the installation (as it's subjected to the force of the water, and what that entails), and at other times, with the object of improving the existing or, simply, to equip according to the federal rules what was previously constituted as an area of adventure. It is because of all of the above that the characteristics of the equipment this descent counts on can substantially vary with the pass of time.

At the time of the writing of this review (July, 2019), the state of the equipment of the ravine is good.

The descent of this ravine has an exit that allows you to leave on foot, once finished its upper section (point 4).

Access to the upper parking (point 0) through the Carril de las Cabrerizas can be performed on tall vehicles or SUVs. Should you not count with an appropriate vehicle, we will have to go down the lane from its junction with the Carretera de la Cabra (A-4050), which implies that the approximation on foot of the activity will increase at 0:45 h. (approximately 3 km). You should park only in the enabled places and never occupying the lane.

Access to the lower parking (point 6) requires a prior payment of 5 €. per person and 5 € per vehicle. That toll is paid at the entrance of the lane, the property of the Cooperativa del Campo de Cázulas (at its intersection with the A-4050), and its said company the one that collects it. At that point, there is a gate that may be found open only in summer. Should it be closed, you have to call well in advance (Tel: 68049362/680493607).

The descents of ravines, as in this case, require the combination of vehicles, so it is very important to pay attention to where you place the keys during the development of the activity. It could be that, by neglect, we forget the keys of the vehicle situated at the end of the path in the interior of the vehicle parked at the start of it, which would cause us to return on foot to the vehicle situated at the start.

If you do not wish to, or if it isn't possible, to make the combination of vehicles, there are 3 options:

  •  Perform only the upper section of the ravine from the upper parking (point 0) and return to that point from the exit the descent has (point 4). To do this, once the fourth abseil of the ravine is done (R4/R4), we will leave it through the signposted path to the right of the runway. The trail goes up the Barranco del Lagarto and leads to a lane that you must follow to the right. Follow the lane until you return to the place in which we started the activity of canyoning itself (point 3). From there, retrace the path you followed at the start until you reach the upper parking (point 0). The return to the upper parking (point 0) from the exit of the ravine (point 4) requires 1:30 h.
  •  Perform only the lower section of the ravine, starting from the lower parking (point 6) and returning to that point. To do this, once our vehicle is parked(section 6), we will climb to the foot of the ravine, following the marks and the nice path that runs next to it, and that is even crossed by two bridges. At the end of the upper section (point 4) will begin to descend to the lower section of the ravine until we leave it (point 5) and return to the lower parking (point 6). The approximate time required to move from the parking area down to the start of the lower section of the descent is 0:30 h.
  •  To perform the full descent of the ravine from the lower parking (point 6) and return to that point. To do this, once our vehicle is parked (section 6), we will climb to the foot of the ravine, following the trail that, in principle, runs next to it (and is even crossed by two hanging bridges), to then leave it to the right (point 4), back to the Barranco del Lagarto and reaching the start of the upper section of the descent (point 3). At the end of the lower section (point 5), we will come out of the ravine, and walk back to the lower parking (point 6). The time needed to reach the start of the upper section of the ravine (item 3) from the lower parking (point 6) is 1:30 h. about.

RULES TO RESPECT:

Expressed in the Master Plan for Use and Management of the Natural Park of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama (PRUG, p. 43), and more extensively in the Management Plan for the Natural Resources of the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almiijara and Alhama (PORN), and the Program Public Use of the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama (PUP). It is reminded that the access limitations and activities on forest land and areas of forestal influence are referred to in the Decree 247/2001 of 13 November, which approves the Regulation on the Prevention and Fight against Forest Fires, and the Order of may 21, 2009 limitations of uses in period of increased risk of fire.

In addition, the realization of this descent requires prior authorization. For this, you have to send an application to the Territorial Delegation of Sustainable Development in Granada. To do so online, use the link.

WEATHER:

 ROAD CONDITIONS:

Before making the descent of the gully it is recommended to consult its conditions (equipment, flow rate, etc). Some of the websites you can consult are:

How to arrive by car

We leave from Granada through the bypass (highway A-44) in the direction of Motril. We take the output 144 (N-323a/Padul/A-4050/Otívar) and, at the roundabout, take the first exit to continue on A-4050, the “Carretera de La Cabra”, in the direction of Lentegí, Otívar, Jete and Almuñecar. Past the km 42 you will reach the junction that is part of the lane of the Cooperativa del Campo de Cázulas in the direction of Junta de los Ríos. Once paid the toll, we descend through the lane and come to the Junta de los Rios (lower parking, point 6). Once the first of our vehicles is parked, we will drive through the lane in the opposite direction in the second vehicle. At the junction with the A-4050, turn to the left (direction of Granada) and follow this road until past the km 34, we get to the crossing that is part of the Carril de las Cabrerizas, through which we will begin to descend. Arrived at the barrier existing in the lane, we will leave the vehicle parked in the upper parking (point 0) remembering that you are only allowed to park in the conditioned areas such as parking space, without invading the lane.

How to get there by public transport

Access to this path, using the public transport here explained, will require, due to the buses available, the overnight stay in Lentegí or Otívar, for at least one night (the night after the completion of the activity).

The buses that depart in the direction of Lentegí or Otívar do it from the Bus station in Granada which do it at different hours. Once we get to the bus stop Lentegí or Otívarwe will have to contact any of the public transport services that are available so that they drive us up to the Carril de las Cabrerizas (point, 0, start of the route). When we get to the barrier, we'll have to make an agreement with the carrier so that they'll pick us up in the Junta de los Ríos (point 6, end of the path) about 6:30 h. later, to return to Lentegí or Otívar. The buses that depart from Lentegí or Otívar in the direction of Granada also do it at different hours

Route

Starting from the barrier that prevents the passage of vehicles in the Carril de las Cabrerizas (point 0) we will continue downhill through the lane, soon in parallel and on the left bank of the Barranco de los Chortales. At a given time we'll see the track turn to the right while a trail continues onwards. At that point we will see how, below, the lane goes through the Barranco de los Chortales, this being the place where the Fuente de las Cabrerizas is situated, perfect to resupply water if we need it. If we don't go down to the fountain, we will leave the lane and continue forward on the path (point 1), which will make us cross the bed of the Barranco de los Chortales on a couple of occasions.

Approximation to walk through the path
that runs through the Barranco de los Chortales

Finishing the walk down the trail, we will see to our right, the beautiful waterfall in the Barranco de la Cueva de Fúnes, and we'll come back to a lane (point 2). From that point on, we only have to walk down until we find ourselves next to the bed of the Ravine of las Chorreras (point 3), ravine which receives the waters of the Ravine of the Chortales and Madroñales a few meters above and that we have come to descend.

Cascada del Barranco de la Cueva de Fúnes
Waterfall in the Barranco de la Cueva de Fúnes

The descent of the Barranco de los Chortales, better known as the drop of the Río Verde, consists of two sections. The upper section has 4 rappels, and numerous ledges. We will begin the upper section traveling through 50 meters of the ravine bed before we find the first rappel (R1/S1), which reaches a height of 8 meters, which is possible to jump.

Pequeño salto antes de llegar al primer rápel
Small break before getting to the first rappel

Primer rápel (R1/S1)
First rappel (R1/S1)

Next, there is a 2-meter slide and a couple of ledges, one of them jumpable. The second abseil (R2/S3/T2) consists of a slide, and reaches a height of 12 meters that you can skip to the right.

Segundo rápel (R2/S3/T2)
Second abseil (R2/S3/T2)

The third abseil (R3) and the fourth abseil (R4/R4) reach up to 11 meters. The fourth abseil avoids the waterfall known as the “Y”, or the Caños Cruzados, and can be performed both by going right or going left, making it possible to jump from the latter side (jump is not recommended due to the pool being a little too shallow).

Tercer rápel (R3)
Third abseil (R3)
Cascada de los Caños Cruzados. Cuarto rápel (R4/S4)
Waterfall of the Caños Cruzados. Fourth abseil (R4/S4)

Just after leaving the pool underneath the Waterfall of the Caños Cruzados, completes the upper section of the ravine, and we could choose to take the path that is located to the right of the runway (point 4) and give up making the descent of the lower section. The path in question, depending on the direction, will lead us to the start of the upper section (item 3), and from there to the upper parking (point 0), or towards the end of the lower section (item 5), and from there to the lower parking (point 6).

The lower section of the gorge has 2 rappels, and also with many ledges. We will travel through 50 meters of the ravine bed before coming to a slide of 4 meters in length. Then there will be 6 ledges before arriving at the first rappel (R5/S5). This first rappel of the bottom section (fifth of the full ravine) reaches a height of 10 meters, a height that you can jump on the right, being careful not to slip, and, in any case, avoiding the waterfall.

Quinto rápel (R5/S5)
Fifth abseil (R5/S5)

We will continue walking through the bed of the ravine, finding a ledge that we will jump. Then we'll arrive at the second of the rappels in the lower section (the sixth of the full ravine). This second abseil (R6) reaches up to 12 meters and is partially under the waterfall. It is not possible to jump due to the insufficient depth of the pool below.

Sexto rápel (R6)
Sixth abseil (R6)

Passed the last rappel, we will make a few more jumps and get to the point at which the path that crosses the ravine runs through its bed. At that point (point 5), we will leave the bed of the ravine, and continue the path up to the Junta de los Ríos, fork formed by our ravine and the ravine of Mina Rica, next to which stands the lower parking (point 6), the end of our activity.

The tracks for GPS in general, and, in particular, registered in ravines, corridors, corners and other tight places, generally contain inaccuracies.

Most of the GPS reflect the graphic scale of the map in the screen. As we activate the zoom of the device, the scale of the map will vary. If we “get closer to the ground,” the scale of the map decreases, and, consequently, we see a smaller amount of “ground” than if we “get away” from it, that is to say, that we increase the scale of the map.

When you follow a downloaded and previously stored track in our GPS, we must ensure that the scale of the map on which the path appears is never too small. We will seek to “get away” from the floor, and we will not obsess with faithfully following the stored track , because we may not notice the inaccuracies that the latter contains.

The precision of the GPS is used to record the route was a, and the GPS that we are using for doing it is another, and therefore, it will be impossible that the points of both tracks, which serves us as a guide and that we are recording, match at 100%. It is for this reason that, even with a single way to move from a particular place, let us note that the track serves us guide runs several meters to the right or to the left of our location.

The equipment, signaling, and any other type of installation on the route may also suffer unforeseen variations with the passage of time, for various reasons such as weather, deterioration, or vandalism; therefore it is strongly recommended to be accompanied by a guide if you do not know the terrain or the situation in which the signaling or equipment are located.

Also, we invite you to document yourselves with books and specialized guides to complement the information described on this website.

Pre-plan the activity. You should obtain reliable and proven information about the route and the activity that is intended to perform, in terms of the physical demands, technique, equipment necessary to make it, etc, In this “design phase” of the activity is where you can act on those elements that generate the risk that the activity entails.

Inform yourselves about the weather in the area. Do not forget that the weather in the mountain is very variable. Today, there are numerous possibilities of obtaining this information. This information is valuable to analyze, evaluate and assess the tolerability of these risks (rain, snow, storms, wind, etc.) which may be present or to accompany the activity. The paths may vary a lot depending on the time of the year and the weather conditions, therefore it is recommended to pay attention to the recommendations made in this regard and check the weather before each departure.

Each one of the participants of an activity must assess whether the weather is or not adverse to their own physical condition and skills to cope with this activity and it is your responsibility to do it or not.

Confirm in the area the prior information. Once you have arrived at the area of the activity to confirm the information previously acquired on the condition of the trails, roads, the snow conditions, weather, water level of the rivers, the situation of the sea to the specific activities that develop there, equipment that could have the sports facility, in case you need them, and dangers arising lately in the path and/or activity etc

This information can be confirmed in the information centers, mountain guides, shelters, Police, etc., The information contained in this website is based on optimal conditions and equipment in good condition to do the activity, and it is not the responsibility of the Provincial council of Granada the conditions of the sport equipment.

Adapt the activity to our physical conditions. Be modest and learn to resign. You have to know to renounce, even though one is very experienced. The mountain will always be there and will wait for us. Always put first the safety of the collective, second the safety of the individual. You should never be too self-confident or lessen your focus, no tter how easy the activity is. The physical ability is fundamental to the realization of any activity in the mountains, so there is no overvaluing our physical abilities, and we have to know how to adapt the paths to our terms. In case of not having sufficient capacity, users should refrain from doing the routes.

Adapt the activity to our technical conditions. For the carrying out of any activity in the mountain and more those that involve some risk, it is necessary to have knowledge of the specific techniques and necessary to carry them out; so we recommend people who do not have the necessary knowledge to refrain from performing any activity, even those that seem easier like hiking. The simple reading of the reviews contained in this website do not train any person for practicing the activity. It is always recommended the accompaniment of guides and staff specialized in the mountains.

Likewise, it requires a prior and deep understanding of the medium in which the activity is carried out, as well as the right time and the optimal conditions to carry it out.

Personal technical equipment. It is absolutely essential to bring the technical material, clothing, footwear, specific documentation, equipment, sun protection, food and water, etc., necessary to perform sports activities. If the activity is of high commitment, it should be expanded to first aid kit and emergency resources. The equipment must be perfectly revised and adjusted to the information and pre-planning.

Subjective objective risks inherent in all sport activities on the mountain. In all athletic activities on the mountain there is an evident exposure to falls with very serious consequences, which may be, but not limited to: brain Trauma, in limbs due to slipping on rocks, in the jumps without any visibility of the bottom, poor reception to the water in the jumps, assurance deficient in the descent of rappelling, extreme tiredness, excess of confidence, lack of preparation or equipment for the activity, inappropriate use of material, hypothermia, and dehydration.

This type of sporting activity involves risks that each participant must know and assume.

We must never underestimate risks and overestimate our capabilities.

It is possible that the fixed equipment the activity counts on (ravines, climbing, etc) and that depends on the progression and/or the protection against the fall in some sections, is not in good condition, as we do not have a regulated periodic maintenance. It is the responsibility of each user to see/check if the material is in good conditions and judge whether or not they can trust in it before you use it.

There are activities which develop in the snow, in places that are very exposed, or in the inside of a course of water, and depending on the time (during defrost, immediately after a snowfall, after a period of rain or storm), could dramatically increase the flow becoming very technical and dangerous. We must never underestimate risks and overestimate our capabilities.

This type of sporting activity involves risks that each participant must know and assume.

As well as an activity in the nature, there may be rock falls, landslides or trees, etc

Guides. In case you go with a guide, you must follow the instructions of the guides, coordinators, or people with more experience, preventing situations of risk, personal or groupal. It is necessary to put in the knowledge of the guides or companions of the activity any possible injury or incident which may affect the development of the activity before and during the athletic activity in nature.

The participants in the activities contained in this website must possess sufficient knowledge and the physical capacity which will enable you to make the specified activities, and to deal with them they must have sufficient capacity, technical and physical, so that they can do it independently and safely. Likewise, they assume the risks inherent in this type of activities and have the knowledge and the equipment needed to perform the activities, and must be approved by the U. E. and in optimum condition for your use.

Do not go alone to the mountain to perform the activity. If you do so, limit yourselves only to places with prior experience, known and consistent with your physical ability and technique. Except in exceptional circumstances, never to leave alone a member of the group, and much less if they're injured or fatigued.

Report on the activity and planned itinerary and respect what has been planned. Communicate to someone (shelter, camping, hotel, friends, relatives) the place and the activity to be performed. And importantly, even if sometimes it is cumbersome, it is imperative to warn that same person of the end of the activity. This recommendation is essential when trying to perform a solo activity.

Graduations. Learn how to orient yourself. Carry GPS, mapping of the area and compass. You can not trust everything to the GPS, in certain situations it may fail. With a proper handling of the compass and map, we can reduce the risks and prevent accidents.

The precision of the GPS is used to record the route is one, and the GPS that we are using for doing it is another, and therefore, it will be impossible that the points of both tracks which serves us as a guide and that we are recording, match at 100%. It is for this reason that, even when there is only one way to travel a particular location, let us note that the track that serves us as a guide runs several meters to the right or to the left of our location.

The activity in the mountains is not finished until we return to a safe place. The summit is only half of the journey. Do let your guard down until you're completely safe. This includes returning home in your car. There are too many mountain sports practitioners who have road accidents after a tough activity.

If there's any accident alert the emergency number, and even the family members or emergency contact. Every minute is important. To meet this recommendation is necessary to carry a mobile phone with charged batteries or any other means of communication to launch the alarm. The GPS is very useful to properly communicate our position and to facilitate our location. In Spain, the monst useful emergency phone numbers are 112 (Civil Protection), 062 (Civil Guard).
